HOW DOES A SPORT OR PERFORMANCE PSYCHOLOGIST DIFFER FROM A GENERAL PSYCHOLOGIST?

As a sport and exercise psychologist endorsed by the Psychology Board of Australia, I have been recognized as having received specialized training and supervised practice that enables me to work more effectively with athletes and performers.  It is important to note that all psychologists, regardless of their specialist endorsements, have received education and training to assist clients with mental health issues as well.

WHAT IS COACHING AND HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM PSYCHOLOGY?

A "coach" in this context (not to be confused with a sport coach) is someone who partners with their client to help that other person unlock his or her performance potential.  This is accomplished primarily through targeted questioning and relevant challenging to spur awareness, ideas, action, and accountability to outcomes.  This process differs from psychological counselling due to the presumed absence of mental health issues requiring attention.
